Burlington’s New Veterans Memorial

Local veterans organizations’ concerns about the increasingly difficult logistics of installing a temporary bed of crosses in Echo Park each Memorial Day to remember the long list of deceased military veterans with Burlington ties has led to the installation of a permanent memorial in the park.
The new memorial consists of four 6-foot by 6-foot black granite blocks, each weighing nearly 10,000 pounds, arranged in a semicircle around the park’s current veterans memorials. The names of deceased veterans are to be etched into the granite blocks in a random order and additional names will be added as veterans die.
The committee working on the project, led by Burlington mayor Jeannie Hefty and local architect and veteran Tom Stelling, are striving to include the veterans’full names and to ensure all families that names appearing on the memorial are there for a legitimate reason.
